Located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, Ritsurin Garden is one of Japan’s finest daimyo (feudal lord) gardens, boasting a history of over 400 years. Covering an area equivalent to 16 Tokyo Domes, the garden features beautifully pruned pine trees, elegant ponds, and historic tea houses, offering visitors an immersive experience of traditional Japanese aesthetics.

A Garden with 400 Years of History

The origins of Ritsurin Garden date back to the early Edo period when Takamatsu's ruling feudal lord, Takatoshi Ikoma, began constructing the garden. Later, the Matsudaira clan took over and continued its development for over 100 years, refining it into the masterpiece it is today.

The garden is divided into two main sections: the South Garden and the North Garden, featuring six ponds and thirteen artificial hills. Designed with the philosophy of "one step, one view", every turn along the path offers a new and picturesque landscape, making each visit a unique experience.

Ritsurin Garden offers more than just scenic beauty—it provides interactive experiences that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in its charm.

・ A Serene Boat Ride on "Senshu-maru"

One of the highlights of Ritsurin Garden is a boat ride on "Senshu-maru," a traditional Japanese wooden boat that glides across the vast Nanko (South Pond). As you sit back and relax, a skilled boatman guides you through the tranquil waters, offering a feudal lord’s perspective of the garden. The reflections of pine trees and stone bridges on the water create an unforgettable view.

・Enjoying Matcha at Kikugetsu-tei Tea House

Nestled within the garden, Kikugetsu-tei Tea House offers a moment of tranquility where visitors can enjoy traditional matcha (green tea) and Japanese sweets while overlooking the stunning scenery. Once used by feudal lords to entertain guests, this historic tea house provides an authentic glimpse into Japan’s tea culture.
