Historical site Takamatsu Castle ruins Tamamo Park

A Rare "Water Castle" Overlooking the Seto Inland Sea

Takamatsu, the central city of Kagawa Prefecture, is home to Tamamo Park, a historical site built on the ruins of Takamatsu Castle. This castle was one of Japan’s rare "mizushiro" (water castles), where seawater was drawn into the moats, making it appear as if the castle was floating on the sea.

Takamatsu Castle was originally built in the late 16th century by Chikamasa Ikoma and later became the residence of the Matsudaira clan. Today, its remains still stand within Tamamo Park, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience its rich history.

Historical Remains and a Beautiful Japanese Garden

As you enter Tamamo Park, the historical remnants of Takamatsu Castle immediately catch your eye. Although the castle’s main keep no longer exists, the impressive castle gates, stone walls, Tsukimi Yagura (moon-viewing tower), and Mizute Gomon (water gate)—a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan—still preserve the spirit of the past.

The Mizute Gomon is especially unique, as it faces the sea, allowing boats to enter the castle directly. This rare feature gives a glimpse into the strategic design of Takamatsu Castle.

Inside the park, a serene Japanese garden spreads across the grounds, offering breathtaking seasonal scenery. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom vibrantly, while autumn brings colorful foliage, creating a picturesque landscape. The tranquil pond, home to graceful koi fish, adds to the nostalgic charm of the Edo period.

Unique Experience #1: Feeding Sea Bream in the Castle Moat

One of Tamamo Park’s most fascinating activities is feeding the sea bream. Unlike other castle moats, Takamatsu Castle's moat still contains seawater, allowing sea bream to thrive.

Visitors can purchase fish food within the park and enjoy feeding these beautiful fish up close. This rare sight of sea bream swimming in a castle moat is something you can only experience here, making it a memorable activity for visitors of all ages.

Unique Experience #2: Traditional Wooden Boat "Tamamo-maru"

A must-try activity at Tamamo Park is the Tamamo-maru, a traditional Japanese wooden boat. In the past, these "wasen" (Japanese boats) were used to navigate the inner and outer moats of the castle. Today, visitors can embark on a scenic boat tour around the moat, guided by a skilled boatman.

As the boat gently glides across the water, you can admire the reflections of the stone walls and castle structures, offering a peaceful and immersive historical experience. On sunny days, this is an especially enjoyable way to explore the park.

A Hidden Gem in Takamatsu’s Tourist Scene

Tamamo Park is a must-visit destination not only for history lovers but also for those who appreciate Japanese culture and nature. Located in the heart of Takamatsu, this park offers a quiet retreat where visitors can feel the depth of history and enjoy a moment of tranquility.

In recent years, more travelers have started to combine a visit to Tamamo Park with Takamatsu Port and Ritsurin Garden, creating a well-rounded sightseeing experience in Kagawa. If you’re looking for a unique historical site with beautiful scenery and cultural experiences, Tamamo Park is the perfect hidden gem to explore.
