Tsushima: A Birdwatcher's Paradise Amidst Migratory Routes

Positioned at Kyushu's northernmost point, Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture lies merely 49.5 kilometers from Korea. This strategic location establishes the island as a vital stopover for migratory birds, with recorded sightings of over 300 species—representing more than half of Japan's known avian population.

Spring and Autumn Migration Seasons

During peak spring migration, the entire island transforms into a premier birdwatching destination. The northern region of Sago in Kamitsushima Town and the southern areas of Naiin and Asou in Izuhara Town serve as exceptional observation points. These locations attract enthusiasts seeking rare sightings of the Yellow-browed Bunting, Yellow-breasted Bunting, and Pallas's Reed Bunting.

Autumn brings Chinese Sparrowhawks to Izuhara Town's Uchiyama Pass. From October through November, Eurasian Sparrowhawks follow the pipit migration. As winter approaches, northern Tsushima welcomes magnificent raptors, including the Steller's Sea Eagle and White-tailed Eagle.

Sago Birdwatching Park

The Sago Plain in Kamitsushima Town has earned national recognition as a premier migratory bird sanctuary, offering glimpses of species seldom seen elsewhere in Japan. Between February and March, Hooded Cranes from Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, rest here during their journey to Siberia. The spring and autumn seasons draw birdwatchers nationwide hoping to spot elusive species like the Ruddy Kingfisher and Black-naped Oriole.

Tips for Visitors

Successful birdwatching requires quiet observation to respect the birds and their habitats. As species visibility varies with seasonal changes and weather conditions, visitors should research current migration patterns before their trip.

Tsushima's remarkable biodiversity and its role in avian migration routes create an exceptional destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.
