Housed in a historical building, the workshop occupies the former Yamachi Hayashikumi Silk Office, constructed in the Taisho era (1921). This building is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, adding to the workshop's allure. The Okaya Silk Workshop is not only a place of production but also an interactive experience for visitors. Here's what you need to know to plan your visit:
Operating Hours: The workshop opens to the public every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This schedule allows visitors ample time to explore and immerse themselves in the art of silk making.
Closed Days: The workshop is closed on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. It also remains closed during the Obon festival period and the New Year holidays, reflecting traditional Japanese customs.
Fees: For a taste of silk weaving, try making a coaster for 1,000 yen. Other options and detailed pricing are available upon request. This offers visitors a chance to create their own piece of silk art, suitable for all skill levels.
Experience Duration: The workshop offers various hands-on experiences:
Hand Weaving Experience: Ranging from about 30 minutes, visitors can choose to make items like coasters, mats, stoles, or half-width obi belts.
Natural Dyeing Experience: Lasting about 90 minutes or more, this activity immerses you in the traditional art of dyeing using natural materials.
Reservation Requirements: Booking in advance is necessary for these experiences. Please contact the workshop for reservations. Note that the natural dyeing experience requires a minimum of five participants, making it an excellent activity for groups.
Parking and Access: The workshop accommodates up to 10 cars in its parking area. For those opting for public transport, it's conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from JR Okaya Station.
