A Castle’s Legacy Surrounded by Seasonal Beauty

Located in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, Takada Castle Site Park is a historical and scenic destination built on the former grounds of Takada Castle. With its rich past and picturesque surroundings, the park offers a peaceful escape and a chance to experience the harmony of nature and Japanese history.

Famous throughout Japan, the park draws many visitors each year, especially during cherry blossom season, when it becomes one of the most celebrated spots for night-time cherry blossom viewing.

Takada Castle was originally constructed in 1614 by Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, during the early Edo period. It served as a strategic defensive site for the Japan Sea region and helped form the foundation of the castle town of Takada.

Today, a reconstructed three-story turret (sanjū-yagura) stands within the park, evoking the spirit of the original castle. Surrounding moats, earthen walls, and stone remains add to the authentic historical atmosphere. Walking paths allow visitors to explore the area at a leisurely pace, taking in both the history and natural beauty.

Seasonal Landscapes Throughout the Year

One of the most captivating features of Takada Castle Site Park is how its scenery transforms beautifully with the seasons. Each time of year offers a unique and equally stunning experience.

・spring approximately 2,200 cherry trees bloom within the park, and when including the surrounding area, that number rises to around 4,000 trees. The illuminated blossoms at night, reflected in the calm waters of the moat, create a breathtaking, dreamlike view. This spectacle is recognized as one of Japan’s top three night-time cherry blossom spots.

・summer the outer moat comes alive with vibrant lotus flowers. Early morning visits offer the best chance to see the blossoms gently opening across the water’s surface, creating a peaceful and photogenic setting.

・autumn the park becomes a colorful canvas of red and gold foliage. The contrast between the vivid leaves and the historical architecture of the castle adds depth and charm to the atmosphere.

・winter snow blankets the park, including the reconstructed three-story turret, transforming the landscape into a quiet, serene world of white. The stillness and clarity of the snowy scenery create a kind of beauty found only in this season.
