Sochinju Hachiman Jinja(Shrine) Gagaku experience

Nestled in the quiet hills of Yawatahama City in Ehime Prefecture, Sochinju Hachiman Jinja(Shrine) offers a rare opportunity to not only hear but also play and experience one of Japan’s oldest musical traditions: Gagaku.

This program was born from the personal journey of a Shinto priest who, while studying in Tokyo, joined a civilian Gagaku ensemble and trained for over a decade under the guidance of a teacher from the Imperial Household Agency’s Music Department. After returning to Yawatahama, he launched this initiative with the desire to share the beauty of Japan’s traditional performing arts with the local community and visitors alike.

Timeless Sounds from the Heian Era – What is Gagaku?

Gagaku, meaning "elegant music," is a form of classical Japanese music that was developed during the Heian period. It evolved from music and dance traditions brought from China and Korea, which were gradually adapted into a uniquely Japanese form used in imperial courts and shrine rituals.

At Sochinju Hachiman Jinja(Shrine), members of the local Gagaku-kai (Gagaku association) carry on this tradition with passion and dedication, making it accessible to modern audiences.

The harmonies of traditional instruments like the shō (mouth organ), hichiriki (double-reed pipe), and ryūteki (bamboo flute) resonate through the shrine grounds, offering a musical experience that feels as though time itself has slowed.

More Than Just a Performance – Gagaku You Can Experience

What sets this Gagaku experience apart is that you’re not just a spectator—you’re a participant.

With an advance reservation, visitors can try playing authentic Gagaku instruments under the guidance of the local Gagaku-kai. Even beginners can take part, as each step is taught carefully and kindly. You’ll learn how each instrument contributes to the overall harmony, and experience the spiritual depth of this ancient music firsthand.

In addition to the hands-on portion, there is also a well-crafted explanation of Gagaku’s history and symbolism, allowing you to engage with the music on a deeper level.
