Ryugu Cave/Toji Sand Skiing Field

A Sea Cave Born from Myth and Time

Located along the coast of Shimoda in Shizuoka Prefecture, the Ryugu Sea Cave is a striking sea-eroded cavern shaped by centuries of wave action. As you step inside, you’ll be captivated by the open ceiling that reveals the sky above and the clear blue water below. The atmosphere feels almost mythical—like a gateway to an underwater palace from ancient legends.

A Heart-Shaped View from Above

For a truly unforgettable view, take the walking path that leads to the top of the cliff above the cave. From this vantage point, the cave’s opening reveals a surprising and beautiful shape: a perfect heart. Formed naturally by erosion, this heart-shaped view has earned Ryugu Sea Cave a reputation as a romantic power spot, drawing couples and photographers alike. The vivid contrast between sea, rock, and greenery leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.

Adventure Awaits at the Toji Sand Skiing Field

Just next door, you’ll find Toji Sand Skiing Field—an unusual and exhilarating experience you won’t find everywhere. This natural sand slope, with a steep incline of up to 30 degrees, allows visitors to ride sleds down toward the sea. It’s fun for all ages, offering an active contrast to the peacefulness of the cave. Set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, it’s a unique way to enjoy Shimoda’s coastal landscape.

Before You Visit: Important Guidelines for Ryugu Sea Cave and Toji Sand Skiing Field

Ryugu Sea Cave and Toji Sand Skiing Field are natural treasures in Shimoda, attracting many visitors for their unique landscapes. However, with increasing tourism in recent years, concerns about overtourism and local impact have grown. To help protect these beautiful sites and ensure a safe, respectful visit, please read the following guidelines carefully.

Swimming is prohibited at Ryugu Sea Cave

Although the cave may look inviting, swimming is not allowed. The water is unpredictable and potentially dangerous due to strong currents and changing tides. For your safety and to respect local rules, please refrain from entering the water.

● Be cautious of uneven terrain

The walking paths around Ryugu Sea Cave and nearby viewpoints include natural rock formations, stairs, and sometimes slippery surfaces. We strongly recommend wearing sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing, especially after rain.

Limited parking space

Please note that parking at the site is very limited (about 10 spaces). During peak seasons or weekends, it can become crowded. We kindly encourage visitors to use public transportation or travel by tour bus whenever possible.

Use proper sleds at Toji Sand Skiing Field

At Toji Sand Skiing Field, sliding down the dunes is a fun experience—but using cardboard or makeshift sleds is prohibited for safety reasons. Please use designated sleds, which are available for rent at the site.

Let’s protect the natural beauty of Shimoda together. By following local rules and showing respect for the area, we can all help preserve this special destination for future visitors. Enjoy your visit safely and responsibly!
