Inubosaki Lighthouse

A Beacon at the Edge of Japan

Standing proudly on the easternmost tip of the Kanto Plain, the Inubosaki Lighthouse overlooks the vast Pacific Ocean from Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture.
Since it was first lit in 1874, this white brick lighthouse has been guiding ships navigating the Pacific waters for over a century.

Its striking silhouette against the endless blue sky and ocean has made it a beloved symbol of Choshi—and one of Japan’s few lighthouses open to the public for climbing.

A Rare Brick Structure with Historical Significance

What makes Inubosaki Lighthouse especially unique is its brick construction, a rarity among Japanese lighthouses.
It was designed by Richard Henry Brunton, the British engineer often referred to as the "father of modern Japanese lighthouses."
Today, it’s recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

Standing approximately 31.5 meters tall, visitors can climb the 99-step spiral staircase inside. At the top, you’re greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean—accompanied by the sound of waves, sea breeze, and the endless horizon stretching far into the distance.

The First Sunrise in Japan

Inubosaki is also renowned as one of the earliest places in Japan to witness the sunrise, especially on New Year’s Day.

Every January 1st, crowds gather to welcome the year’s first light as it rises from the horizon over the ocean—a moment filled with hope and reflection.

But the sunrise here is magical year-round. Arrive in the early morning, and you’ll see the sky gradually painted in warm hues of red and gold.

Watching the pure white lighthouse glow in the soft morning light is an unforgettable experience—especially for photographers and romantics at heart.
