Interview with Makiko Masutani: Exploring the Essence of Everyday Life

── What inspired you to participate in this exhibition?

Masutani: I held a solo exhibition here in 2017.
This exhibition is the second installment following last year’s 'Layers of Me, Layers of Us', but I am joining for the first time this year.
When I was invited to participate, I felt a deep connection and immediately decided to take part.

── Can you tell us about your artwork in this exhibition?

Masutani: All of my exhibited works are drawn using colored pencils.
Drawing allows me to stay closely connected to my daily life and artistic process,
which aligns perfectly with the concept of this exhibition.

── How should international visitors approach your work?

Masutani: My works depict everyday objects and landscapes.
Some of the motifs may feel unfamiliar, while others might evoke a sense of connection.
Regardless of the subject, I hope visitors can feel the subtle atmosphere that exists between the objects placed side by side on the canvas.

── What are your future plans?

Masutani: One of my dreams is to create a Wunderkammer—a room filled with mysterious and fascinating objects, using my artwork.
I will continue creating pieces to bring this vision to life.
