Battleship Island : A UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the remnants of a town that flourished due to coal mining.

Gunkanjima, also known as Battleship Island, is an artificial island located about 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port.

Situated off the coast, it was created by land reclamation around rocky outcrops. The entire island is surrounded by a seawall, and its distinctive appearance features towering reinforced concrete structures.

In 2015, Gunkanjima was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The coal from the Hashima Coal Mine on the island was of high quality and played a significant role in Japan's modernization, contributing alongside the neighboring Takashima Coal Mine.

However, with the shift from coal to oil as the primary energy source, the island began a decline, leading to its closure in 1974.

The residents left the island with mixed emotions, turning it into an uninhabited isle.

In 2009, access to the island was opened to the public, and currently, many people participate in landing tours to visit Gunkanjima, exploring its history and remnants.
