Anne’s Rose in Japan – A Journey of Peace and Beauty at Ayabe Rose Garden

A Hidden Gem in Kyoto: A Garden That Tells the Story of Anne’s Rose

While Kyoto is famous for its temples and historic streets, a lesser-known treasure awaits in the northern countryside—Ayabe Rose Garden.

With 150 varieties and 1,200 roses, this beautiful garden is also a special place where visitors can learn about the history of Anne’s Rose in Japan.

Anne’s Rose – A Symbol of Peace That Took Root in Japan

Anne’s Rose was created by a Belgian rose breeder and given to Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father, as a symbol of her legacy.

In 1972, a choir group from Ayabe’s Holy Jesus Church visited Israel, where they unexpectedly met Otto Frank. This chance encounter led to a deep friendship, and Otto Frank decided to send ten Anne’s Rose saplings to Japan as a gift of peace.

However, after their long journey, only one of the ten saplings survived. It was carefully nurtured in Kyoto’s Sagano Church, where it bloomed for the first time in 1973.

From this single rose, Anne’s Rose was cultivated and spread across Japan—thanks to the dedicated people of Ayabe. Today, over 8,000 Anne’s Roses bloom in gardens, parks, and schools across the country, carrying Anne’s message of peace and resilience.
