Perched atop a hill in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Hirado Castle—also known as "Kameoka Castle"—commands impressive views over the Hirado Strait.

Historical Background

Construction commenced in 1704 under Matsura Takashi, the 30th head of the Matsura clan, and reached completion in 1718 under his successor, Matsura Tokunobu. Though the original structure fell to the Meiji Restoration's castle abolition decree, a reconstructed three-story, five-tiered keep rose again in 1962. Today, the castle ranks among Japan's Top 100 Castles.

Highlights

The main keep's top floor provides spectacular panoramic views across the Hirado Strait. Inside, visitors discover exhibits chronicling Hirado's rich heritage, enhanced by interactive digital art installations. The Inui Turret, which once protected the Ninomaru Palace, derives its name from its north-northwestern orientation. In 2021, the "Kaiju Yagura" turret was transformed into "Hirado Castle CASTLE STAY Kaiju Yagura," Japan's pioneering permanent castle accommodation.

Hirado Castle lies just five minutes by car from Hirado Bridge, offering convenient parking. The surrounding area features numerous attractions and restaurants, providing an excellent base for exploration.

Visitor Information

The castle welcomes visitors from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM between April 1 and September 30, and from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM between October 1 and March 31. The facility closes on December 30 and 31. Visitors should consult the official website for current information.
